Property Tax Relief Available Through Homestead Exemption

Property tax bills for 2009-10 will be reduced for qualified homeowners in School Districts under the Homestead Exemption program, according to Senator Jane Orie (R-Allegheny).  Orie said the program is made possible through the distribution of a portion of gaming funds provided from taxes on the slots casinos throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

To qualify, the property must be an owner-occupied residence and the property owner must have filed a homestead exemption application with their County by Monday, March 1, 2010. To check the homestead exemption status of your property, visit the following websites:

Allegheny County
Butler County

Applications for the Homestead Exemption Program are also available.

Orie noted that the tax relief will not be distributed as a check. Instead, the tax reduction will appear as a reduced assessment line item on property tax bills. For those taxpayers whose real estate taxes are handled by a mortgage company, the adjusted real estate tax bill will be sent directly to the company as usual. Property tax bills are mailed in July.
