FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Orie Bill Bans Bail for Sex OffendersSenate Bill 1128 prohibits release pending sentencing, appeal Senator Jane C. Orie (R-40) is reintroducing legislation that would bar convicted sex offenders from being granted bail pending sentencing or during an appeal of their conviction. Senate Bill 1128, which Senator Orie originally introduced as Senate Bill 1230 during the 2007-08 Legislative Session, would specifically apply to those individuals who have been convicted of an offense that requires registration under Megan’s Law and where the victim was under 18 years of age. "This legislation came about from a case in 2007 where a convicted sex offender was granted bail and committed another offense," said Senator Orie. "My bill sets very specific criteria for the denial of bail. These are individuals who have already proven that they are a danger to the community. They are a danger to minors and they should not be allowed back on the streets until they have either served their sentence or their conviction is overturned."
