FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Orie Epi Pen Measure Moved Out of House CommitteeStudents with severe allergies could carry EpiPens Today, the House Education Committee reported a bill that would allow students with severe allergies to carry their medication at schools, according to Senator Jane C. Orie (R-40), prime sponsor of the measure. "Pennsylvania currently allows students to carry their asthma inhalers at school," said Sen. Orie. "However, many children are still susceptible to severe reactions -- whether it is from eating peanut-based foods or being stung by a bee -- and need instant access to life-saving epinephrine, or EpiPen auto-injector, medication. Senate Bill 736 would amend the School Code by allowing students with severe allergies (anaphylaxis) to carry their EpiPens at school with the approval of the students’ physician and parents. "Over 40 states allow students to carry their EpiPens at schools," said Sen. Orie. "It is time Pennsylvania prevents needless tragedies by ensuring that they have access to their life-saving medication." SB 736 will now go to the full House.
