Orie Calls for Gaming Hearings to be held in Pittsburgh with Regard to the PITG Casino Bailout

Today, Senator Jane Orie (R-Allegheny) and Senator Jim Ferlo (D-Allegheny) called on the Gaming Control Board to hold at least one public hearing on the application submitted by Neil Bluhm and Don Barden for the change in ownership of the Majestic Star Casino in the City of Pittsburgh.

"I would expect the Board to hold comprehensive hearings in the City, both to comply with the law, and to maximize local public input." stated Orie.

Noting the urgency expressed by supporters of the Bluhm buyout, Senator Orie stated, "I also hope the hearing would include expert witnesses who could testify from the perspective of other potential bidders to finish the project and with regard to concerns about delay should the process be opened up."

Previously, both Senators had urged the Board to reconsider the license of PITG Gaming, and to consider opening up the process to new applicants to rescue the failed Majestic Star project.

"It's important that local elected officials and the public be informed about this significant proposed transaction," Ferlo added.  "The owner of the casino is hopefully going to be an important corporate citizen for decades to come, so the people of Pittsburgh should have an opportunity to hear the facts."

The letter submitted to the Gaming Board notes that there is a legal obligation to hold hearings on license applications in the municipality where the casino will be located and that the request is consistent with the public interest.
