Senator Orie Asks Governor to Declare a Disaster Emergency

In a letter sent early this morning, State Senator Jane Orie (R-40) urged Governor Ed Rendell to declare a disaster emergency for areas affected by recent floods, and invited him to tour the devastation left behind.

Recent storms caused severe flooding which damaged homes, businesses, roads and bridges while leaving more than 50,000 homes and businesses without electricity on Thursday night.  The flooding hit Shaler, Ross, Etna and Hampton Townships particularly hard.

Orie said the declaration of a disaster emergency by the governor would activate the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and authorize commonwealth agencies to utilize all available resources and personnel necessary to cope with the magnitude and severity of this flooding emergency.

"The recent floods proved to be tragic for many area families and business owners, as well as crippling to roads, bridges and community infrastructure and resources," said Orie.  "I hope the Governor takes swift action to declare a disaster emergency so we can devote all the necessary resources and assistance to our area."

Until a disaster emergency is declared, families and business owners who were affected by the recent flooding can do the following:

  • Contact the American Red Cross.  They can help by providing vouchers to purchase new clothing, groceries, essential medications, bedding, essential furnishings, and other items to meet emergency needs.  They can also provide cleanup kits.
  • Contact your insurance agent to discuss claims.
  • Listen to your radio for information on assistance that may be provided by the state or federal government or other organizations.
  • Contact your local municipality for assistance and to report damages.
  • Dial 911 for all life-threatening and potentially life-threatening situations.

Residents who have questions or have difficulty reaching their local municipality can contact the Allegheny County Emergency Management Services at 412-473-2550.

Senator Orie also warned area residents about the dangers of hiring cleanup and repair contractors immediately after a disaster.

"When hiring contractors, check references and be sure they are qualified professionals.  Use extra caution when approached by people who are driving through the neighborhood offering to help in cleaning up or repairing your home.  Unfortunately, some individuals see disasters as a window of opportunity to scam families or individuals who are seeking help in a time of need."
