FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Senator Orie Announces Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program ExtensionSenator Jane Clare Orie (R-40), Majority Whip, announces that the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) has extended the deadline for the Armed Forces Loan Program to December 31, 2007. The loan forgiveness program is a one-time loan forgiveness payment for student borrowers who served in the Armed Forces in an active duty status between September 11, 2001 and December 31, 2007, provided they have an eligible loan and meet eligibility requirements. A borrower must hold one of four connections to Pennsylvania: 1) currently a resident of Pennsylvania, 2) a nonresident who left a Pennsylvania school due to a call to active duty, 3) any Pennsylvania resident who was living in Pennsylvania at the time of enlistment and was in the military continuously through at least September 11, 2001, regardless of current place of residence, or 4) any non-resident who attended a PA approved institution of postsecondary education, who went directly from this enrollment into the Armed Forces of the United States, and was in the military continuously through at least September 11, 2001, regardless of current place of residence. "This program allows us to help our military men and women who have served this country since the September 11th attacks on our nation," said Orie. "Their valor and allegiance to protecting the United States needs to be recognized and the Armed Forces Forgiveness Program is yet another way to say thank you." Applications for the program are available at www.pheaa.org, or by calling PHEAA directly at 1-800-233-0557. For more information, contact Senator Orie's North Hills office at 412-630-9466, Cranberry office at 724-776-3500, or Harrisburg office at 717-787-6538.
