FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Orie Introduces Bill To Eliminate Patronage, Reduce Costs and Open Up Contracting At Turnpike CommissionToday, Jane Orie (R-Allegheny, Butler) announced the introduction of legislation to ensure the accountability and integrity of the Turnpike Commission. In its report discussing the Commonwealth's transportation crisis, the Transportation Funding and Reform Commission emphasized the critical role of cost savings and agency reforms in meeting the Commonwealth's transportation needs. "I believe the need for those agency reforms and cost savings must apply equally to local transit agencies and state-level transportation entities," declared Orie. Senator Orie's legislation would prohibit the Turnpike Commission from hiring outside lobbyists to lobby state government, and open up any bonds or major contracts to competitive bidding. "Conflicts of interest and closed-door decision-making affect the cost of services and serve only to enrich political insiders,"" said Orie. "If the Commission expects to play a larger role in the transportation future of the Commonwealth, it must comport its conduct to standards that are above reproach." The bill would also eliminate patronage by requiring the Commission to comply with the Civil Service Act with regard to future hiring of employees. Further, the Commission would be required to follow state initiatives with regard to contracting with women and minority owned businesses. |
