Alumna Senator Jane Clare Orie Rises to Majority Whip in the Pennsylvania Senate

As one of five women in the Senate Republican Caucus, Senator Jane Clare Orie (R-Allegheny) was elected by colleagues to serve as Majority Whip for the 2007 – 2008 legislative session.  Senator Orie has marked a historic point in history as the first woman elected to a Senate leadership position.

Senator Orie who holds a law degree from Duquesne University and a Bachelor of Arts from Franklin and Marshall College was first elected to the Senate in 2001 following four and one-half years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.  As Majority Whip Senator Orie will assist the Majority Leader with Senate floor proceedings and work to gain support for legislation and assure Republican policies and strategies are maintained through the cooperative efforts of the majority caucus.

Prior to entering public service, Senator Orie served in the Pennsylvania Attorney Generals Office as Deputy Attorney General in the Division of Criminal Prosecution and as Assistant Allegheny County District Attorney where, due to her high conviction rate, she worked her way up to the divisions of Homicide and Crimes Against Persons.

Senator Orie's priorities in the coming session will be to address domestic abuse, expand property tax cuts to all homeowners and to restore the public's trusts in the General Assembly.
